I can still remember the day I brought him home. It was January,
it was snowing, and my hands were shaking as I drove my wife and
newborn son home from the hospital. My wife and I sat on the couch
in the family room and looked at each other....Now What?!
I was a first-time father - I'd read all the books, gone to the classes,
received lots of advice, but I still felt overwhelmed, unprepared, and
in over my head.
So I jumped in with both feet! I got my hands dirty...and a little smelly...
and I figured it out. I learned to laugh at myself; I learned to accept that
I was going to make mistakes, learn from them and get better. Now, sixteen
years later I have two sons that I'm very proud of...I still make plenty of
mistakes, and I always know that I'll figure it out.
So what did I learn from this? I won't always know all the answers. As I
grow and take on new challenges, I still find myself in situations where I feel
overwhelmed, unprepared, and in over my head. I also know that if I dive in,
keep a good attitude, and allow myself to make some mistakes that I'll figure
it out - the same way I did sixteen years ago. In the end, I'm always
surprised to learn that I'm capable of more than I ever imagined.
So, what are you waiting for? Dive In!
